LB Joshed by Lanyon

Prolific m/m author Josh Lanyon is a Lambda finalist, the writer of Man Oh Man Writing M/M for Ca$h and Kinks, a drinker of Irish Coffee, and the creator of everyone's favorite amateur sleuth – Adrien English. Josh took time from his insanely busy schedule to interrogate... er....interview pal LB Gregg. Good times and a scuffle over the last golden Oreo ensued.

JOSH: What do you like most about the writing process? What do you like least?

LB: I like the moment when you let go of fear and doubt and become lost in a story of your own making. Most of writing is just hard work and gritty determination…but occasionally things come together, they gel, and you feel yourself within the work. It’s freeing and it’s like a runner’s high, only less sweaty.

That said…when I get into these moments…personal hygiene goes out the window. That’s a minus.

Least? Well, the aforementioned fear and self doubt. Terrible things. I should stop that.

JOSH: If you were a carpenter and I was a lady -- no, scratch that. What elements do you think define your work?

LB: Fast paced. Hot sex. Fast paced hot sex?

The spirit of community, friendship, and family. The value of forgiveness. The heart of love. I guess that’s romance in a nutshell.

(And, no, I will not have your baby.)

JOSH: What do you take in your coffee? Have you tried Irish Coffee first thing in the morning? I think it stimulates the creative process. What do you think?

LB: I know a writer who drinks in the morning. I get happy emails. ::cough:: It’s probably alright but only in moderation. Wine in the evenings, however, is a must.

Coffee should be a light to medium roast (hazelnut or Jamaican Butter Rum) with extra skim milk and NO sugar. Anything else is the drink of Philistines. Otherwise, I have an open mind.

JOSH: I find your work very funny. Real life funny, not glib or mean-spirited. When did you get to be so funny? No, seriously, do you make conscious decisions about writing "funny?"

LB: Being funny is often a defense mechanism for the ADD adult. See, what happens with ADD is your mind wanders when people talk to you…like now…for example… and you wind up picking up a few words in the conversation and to cover for your inability to stay on task— the QUICK WITTED cover with a joke.

Best defensive is always a good offense. I’m offensive. I was much loved by my high school English teachers. I had a collection of ‘pink slips’ for being the perennial class clown. I spent hours sitting in the office, chatting up the secretaries, reflecting on why my jokes didn’t work.

Consciously funny? I think you have to be careful. Humor has to be natural; it can’t be faked or forced. It’s a huge turn off when humor falls flat…and I know that some people do not find me funny in the least. Obviously they are

If there's one thing author about town LB Gregg enjoys more than writing, it's talking about writing.
